ASSISTANCE FOR STUDENTS IN ITALY

Welcome to Italy! As an international student, there are a few important things to know and do upon your arrival to make your transition as smooth as possible. Here’s a guide to help you get settled in your new home:

1. Residence Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno)

  • If you are a non-EU citizen and plan to stay in Italy for more than 90 days, you need to apply for a residence permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) within 8 days of your arrival!
  • Obtain the application kit at a local post office (Poste Italiane) and fill it out with your personal information, passport details, and visa type.
  • Once you have applied, you will receive a receipt that serves as proof of your application.
  • You can monitor your permit of stay application status at http://www.portaleimmigrazione.it/.  by using your user ID and password found on your post office receipt

2. Health Care System (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale - SSN)

  • Italy's public healthcare system, the Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN), provides healthcare services to all residents, including international students.
  • If you have a residence permit (or applied for one), you are entitled to access the SSN.
  • Register with the SSN at your local health office (ASL) with your residence permit, passport, and codice fiscale (tax code).
  • Once registered, you will be assigned a primary care physician and receive a health card, giving you access to various medical services.

3. Tax Code (Codice Fiscale)

  • The codice fiscale is your Italian tax code and serves as an essential identification number for various administrative procedures, including opening a bank account and registering for the SSN.
  • You can obtain your codice fiscale at the local Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate).
  • Bring your passport to apply for your codice fiscale.

4. SIM Card

  • Getting a local SIM card is crucial for staying connected while in Italy.
  • You can purchase a SIM card at mobile phone shops, supermarkets, or even online.
  • To register for a SIM card, you'll need to provide a valid ID such as your passport.
  • Choose a plan that suits your data and calling needs. Many providers offer special deals for students.

5. Transportation

  • Public Transport: Italy has an extensive public transportation network, including buses, trams, trains, and metro systems in larger cities.
  • Travel Cards: Consider purchasing a travel card for unlimited rides on local public transportation. Student discounts may be available.
  • Trains: Trenitalia and Italo are the main train services in Italy. Trains are a fast and efficient way to travel between cities.
  • Bikes and Scooters: Many cities offer bike and scooter sharing programs, which can be a convenient and eco-friendly option for getting around.
  • Driving: If you plan to drive, familiarize yourself with local traffic laws and regulations. Depending on your country of origin, you may need to obtain an Italian driving license.

6. Accommodation

  • University Housing: Many universities offer housing options for students, including dormitories and student residences. These are often the most convenient choices, as they provide a built-in community and are usually located close to campus.
  • Private Rentals: You can also rent an apartment or a room in a shared apartment.
  • Student Housing Agencies: There are agencies that specialize in housing for students. They can help you find suitable accommodation and often provide support throughout the rental process.
  • Things to Consider: When looking for accommodation, consider factors such as location, access to public transport, proximity to your university, and amenities. Read rental contracts carefully and ask questions if anything is unclear.

We hope this information helps you settle into your new life in Italy. Don't hesitate to reach out to your University's international student office for more guidance and support!
