PROCEDURES FOR STUDYING IN ITALY

According to the current Annual Procedures concerning the entry, stay, enrollment, and recognition of qualifications of international students for higher education courses in Italy 2024/2025, international students residing abroad seeking higher education opportunities in Italy are required to adhere to the following compulsory steps:

  1. Apply for admission through the website of the chosen Higher Education Institution within the institution's specified deadline. It's important to note that each institution has distinct admission criteria, deadlines, and tuition fees, all of which are directly accessible on the respective institution's website.
  2. Submit the online pre-enrolment application within the designated timeframe exclusively through the UNIVERSITALY portal, the only free and official access portal of the Ministry of University and Research.

Please be aware that:

  • The expiration dates for pre-enrolment procedures in first and second-level courses at Italian universities and AFAM institutions are specified in the annual timetable published by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR).
  • If a Declaration of Value (DoV) is requested by the Italian Higher Education Institution to which the student is applying, it will be issued by the Competent Diplomatic Mission. For additional information, please contact the Italian consular network of your Country.

3. Upon pre-enrolment, apply for a D-VISA, in case the duration of your course of study exceeds 90 days, OR apply for a C-VISA in case the duration of your study course is less than 90 days.

Study visas (type D STUDIO “Immatricolazione Università”) are granted provided applicants fulfill all stipulated requirements and conditions in accordance with the current regulations and within the deadlines outlined by the relevant Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) timetables.

Please note that:

  • For the academic year 2024/2025, visa applications must be submitted to the competent diplomatic-consular representations by no later than November 29, 2024.
  • The validation of the pre-enrollment application for a study program and the related documentation provided by higher education institutions does not automatically imply the issuance of the visa. The final decision on issuing a study visa lies exclusively with the Italian diplomatic-consular missions.

4. Apply for Your Residence Permit: Within eight working days of your arrival in Italy on a type D “national” visa for study, apply for a permit of stay (Permesso di soggiorno per motivi di studio) through the local Post Office (Poste Italiane). After submitting your request, you will receive instructions for going to the Police Department (Questura) to complete the process.

5. Finalize Your Enrolment Process with Your Chosen Academic Institution: Once you have obtained your residence permit, complete the necessary steps to finalize your enrolment with your chosen academic institution.
